Enjoy the Ride!
Susan May Warren

We sit poised on the top of a cliff, a near drop off before us, that falls to a rushing river. In the middle, a bridge of snow and ice hints at our destination. My husband guns the snowmobile engine. “Ready?”

Ready? For a face plant into a tree, maybe reconstructive surgery? To feel my stomach ripped from my body as we plummet down the mountain? Let’s do it!

We live on five acres of woods in northern Minnesota that butts up to a national forest. Hence, our backyard is about a hundred thousand acres. Aside from harboring deer, lynx, fox, cougar and bear, it also makes excellent snowmobile terrain. And not long ago, Mrs. Claus gave her Santa a snowmobile for two.

I love snowmobiling. Flying over the snow, catching air over drifts. I love to drive, to be at the helm of the beast as I weave around trees and over hill and dale, my husband sitting behind me. I also love riding behind my husband as he drives, feeling those powerful arms as he’s muscling the snowmobile into the wilds. We follow unknown trails, driven by a Magellan spirit, hoping that we have enough gas to get us back to civilization. I love hanging on, simply trusting him, knowing that wherever he’s taking me, he’s going first.

But there are times, when I see where he’s taking me, and I just have to bury my head in his back. Like straight down a cliff.

However, my heart cheers, despite the terror as we gun it down the hill, over the river, up the opposite side. And, if we hadn’t let ourselves go, we would have never discovered the beauty of a winter river, a hidden jewel buried deep in the forest. Nor the exhilaration of facing the challenge together.

Further on, we find an enchanted forest of towering white pine. Catch a view of Lake Superior, discover an old cabin in the woods.

It occurs to me that snowmobiling is much like my spiritual life. Occasionally, I drive, and it’s me setting our course, weaving through the trees, getting us hopelessly lost. But when God takes the “wheel” and I hang on, trusting Him for the speed and destination, I see the scenery. I trust him to keep me safe. I trust him to bring me home, where there is an eternal supply of hot chocolate.

As Christmas season becomes more hectic, what if I let God drive?  Maybe everything doesn’t have to be perfect, and maybe I don’t have to control every tradition, every holiday nuance. What if I just held on for the ride?

I’ll bet I’ll still get there, and I might even enjoy the scenery along the way.

How have you let go, and “enjoyed” the scenery of this hectic, exhilarating Christmas season?

Merry Christmas!

Advent
By Sibella Giorello

Consider the bride's walk down the aisle. We all know where that woman in the white is going but somehow waiting for her to arrive at the altar is an essential part of the ceremony. In fact, the waiting is so essential that even cheapskate Vegas chapels include wedding marches.

Why?

Because the wait adds meaning to the moment.

At Christmas time, we tend to forget this essential truth about anticipation. We're lost to shopping malls and checklists, rushing toward December 25th so quickly that we forget the quiet joy of the month's other 24 days -- and then we wonder why we feel so empty on the 26th, amid ribbons and wrapping paper and our best intentions.

Because the wait adds meaning to the moment.

And that is why Advent is so important to Christmas.

I'm as guilty as the next harried person. This Advent was particularly tricky because just six hours before it started, I was still trying to finish a 110,000-word novel that was written over the course of the year -- written while homeschooling my kids, keeping my hubby happy, and generally making sure the house didn't fall down around us.

It's an understatement to say my free time is limited. But waiting adds meaning, and Advent is crucial to Christmas, so I've devised several Advent traditions that are simple, powerful and easy to keep even amid the seasonal rush.

When my kids outgrew the simple Advent calendars around age 7, I stole an idea from my writer friend Shelly Ngo (as T.S. Eliot said, "Mediocre writers borrow. Great writers steal." Indulge me.)

Here's how it goes: Find 24 great Christmas books, wrap them individually and place then under the tree. On the first day of Advent, take turns picking which book to open. When we did this, we would cuddle under a blanket and read aloud -- oh, the wonder, the magic! We savored "The Polar Express," howled with "How Murray Saved Christmas," and fell silent at the end of "The Tale of The Three Trees" (note: some of the picture books I chose were not explicitly about Christmas but they always echoed the message that Jesus came to earth to save us from ourselves and to love us beyond our wildest imagination. In that category, Angela Hunt's retelling of The Three Trees definitely hits the Yuletide bull's eye).

This Advent tradition lasted for about five years. It gave us rich daily discussions about the season's real meaning, without being religious or legalistic, and it increased family couch time. But like the lift-the-flap calendars, my kids outgrew the picture books.

Because the wait adds meaning, and Advent is crucial, I prayed for another way to celebrate anticipation of Christmas. By the grace of God, last year I found an enormous Advent calendar on  clearance at Pottery Barn. Made of burlap, it has large pockets big enough to hold some serious bounty.

But my husband and I didn't want the kids focusing only on the materialist stuff for Advent -- we already fight that on Christmas day. We decided to fill the daily pockets with simple necessities and small gift cards. We also printed out the nativity story from Luke 2:1-21 in a large-sized font and cut each verse out. From Day 1 to Day 21, there is one verse to read aloud. The kids memorize it, then get to open their present (again, on alternating days for each person). Then we tape the verse to the wall in order. By Day 22, all the verses are on the wall, in order, and the kids now try to recite the entire nativity story from memory. That's not as difficult as it sounds because they've been memorizing one verse each day. Still, the entire recitation -- verbatim -- usually requires Day 23 and Day 24. Whoever does memorize the entire thing -- without mistakes --  earns a bonus gift of $25.

Does that sounds extravagant?

It is.

Because we want our kids to understand that God came down and humbled himself and taught us about love right before He suffered and died on behalf of the undeserving -- which is every one of us.

"That's" extravagant.

And in the waiting, we find even more meaning.

Nature Explorers: Through the Holidays (Review/Giveaway)

“The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands.  Day after
day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge.  There is no speech or
language where their voice is not heard.”  Psalm 19:1-3

Nature Explorers: A mini book of Nature Studies through the Holidays
by Cindy West and Melissa Leach
Published by Shining Dawn Books
$5.00 Electronic book

How many of you remember playing outside FOR HOURS? Building forts, climbing trees, running through the fields on grandpa's farm (or your dad's bosses farm like me), riding horses that technically "weren't broke", playing in the hay mow or ice skating on the pond in your boots?

NaturExplorers:
This mini-nature study allows your kids to learn about Advent using carefully chosen scripture verses & a list of suggest hymns you can use during your family time. The unit starts by opening with an explanation of how Advent is celebrated each week includes discussions and ideas for learning about:

Your children will:
1) Learn about Prophecy, Bethlehem, Shepherds & Angels. They will learn about the symbolism inherent in Advent - or if you don't want to focus on Symbolism you can use Advent to discuss concepts such as Peace, Joy & Love which is part of the Christmas season.
2) Observe their surroundings in fields and in the wild, learn about the habitat and what animals eat in the winter.
3) Think about how we show love and concern for animals and our surroundings.
4) Create their own advent wreath and various nature themed crafts for gifts, make Christmas decorations,
5) Experience nature through walks, observing the trees, tame & wild animals,  study seeds, berries & nuts, trees and foliage. If you have time you can also study animal tracks, go on a thankful hunt and more.

There is so much that Homeschoolers, teachers, preschools, after school programs can do with a program such as the NaturExplorer curriculum and there are so many different units you can use with your children through out the year. This is a program you can use year after year - you can tweak it to fit the ages of your kids and if you have quite an age span you can have the older kids work with the younger ones in a team building exercise.

To Purchase & a Giveaway!
You can purchase this mini unit for $5 on their website - it's a great way to get to review their curriculum and see it's something you'd like to add to your classrooms, homeschool curriculum, etc!  Shining Dawn Books is giving 3 of my readers a copy of the Advent Unit to use with your family, classroom, after school program - where ever you want! I know you are going to be as impressed as I am!

The "Community" Christmas episode everyone will be talking about!

I was given the opportunity to preview the new Claymation "Community" Christmas episode tonight and requested to blog my thoughts on the show.  I wasn't really sure what to expect since I've never seen the show "Community" sitcom.

The new Claymation Christmas episode is similar to the old Christmas shows "Frosty the Snowman", "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer" and the "Easter Bunny" show (sorry don't remember the name of that one).  The story is based on one of the characters wondering what the meaning of Christmas is and his friends are worried about him and decide to try to help him.  Why?  Because he is Muslim, wondering what Christmas is all about.

This is not your typical Christmas special.  The characters in the show are Christian, Jewish, Muslim and I think one of them may even be atheist (although that's never said, it was just a feeling I got).  There is no mention of faith except in one phrase sung by Yvette Nicole Brown (Shirley) who sings about Baby Jesus.  The only mention of the Jewish faith is pointing out the Menorah and of course the main character in this particular episode is Muslim.  That is the extent of talking about the True Meaning of Christmas, Hanukkah and Ramadan.

I didn't particularly like the show or not.  It was a relief that there wasn't a lot of language or sexual innuendo (can you imagine?).  It's just a light comedy about Christmas and a shallow discussion of what "Christmas" is.  I wouldn't worry about kids watching the show - they'll probably enjoy the Claymation and watching a new holiday special.

Abed's Uncontrollable Christmas (rated PG)
Thursday night December 9th (8/7pm) on NBC.

Book Review/Giveaway: The Polar Express 25 years of Magic!

This giveaway is Closed.
Winner will be announced tomorrow - thanks for joining in!

This year The Polar Express celebrates 25 years of magic!  Most of us know the movie staring Tom Hanks and those cute kids on that great big black train.  The hot chocolate scene is one of my favorites.  I think I got through most of the movie before I even realized that Tom Hanks did most of the characters - and that only adds to the magic.

Now, the book is somewhat different than the movie.  The kids and conductor all look the same, but the story itself is different.  Certain scenes from the movie were added (not in the book) but I think for a movie with additional scenes that the story itself wasn't ruined but only added to the excitement and suspense.

PhotobucketBook Summary:
One Christmas Eve many years ago, a boy lies in bed, listening hard for the bells of Santa's sleigh, which he had been told by a friend do not exist.  Later that night he hears not bells but a very different sound.  He looks out his window and is astounded to see a steam engine parked in front of his house!  The conductor invites him to board the Polar Express, a train filled with children on their way to the North Pole.

Better late than never.... Tuesday Teaser

Have you ever wondered how Santa came to BE Santa?  The "True" story behind the tale?  Or, is it a story? Tuesday was Tuesday Teaser, where a 'snippet' of a story is shared.  Just enough to "wet" the tongue?

The Christmas Chronicles, The Legend of Santa Claus
by Tim Slover

"Look out!" shouted Professor Wyatt.  "You're missing the entrance!  We'll be stranded!"

"I know... what I'm... doing!" panted the reindeer.

And he did.  He gritted his teeth, got a hoof between the holly bushes, pivoted smartly on it, and swung into the road.  The sleigh careened wide behind the reindeer, a runner came off the ground, sliced off a sprig of the left handed bush without knocking over it's pot, and then both runners slammed down onto the road as the reindeer bounded up it's steep, shining slope.  That jolt sent a Something bouncing out of the sleigh and onto the road.  It was solid and heavy and very close to the dimensions of the Oxford English Dictionary, Compact Edition.  It slid down eleven feet of road, and stopped almost right at my feet.

Stay tuned for a review & giveaway of this wonderful new holiday books, just right to read in the evenings as a family before bedtime!  Put December 6th on your calendar!

Winter Rosy Wool Wreath

I love Winter decorations that can stay up until Valentine's Day.  They are more versatile, fit several decor styles and can go up the day after Thanksgiving and stay up until February.  Creative Passage has posted a delightful wreath that you and your kids can make for teachers, grandparents, friends of the family - anyone will love it. And it's versatile enough for Christmas, Hanukkah or just for Winter. I asked Ellen if she would make up a tutorial for my readers and she has kindly agreed to share it with us.  I'm going to post a picture and the supplies needed and then you can go to her blog for the instructions.

(Isn't it darling?)

Felted Wool Rose Wreath Tutorial

Hot Glue Gun & Glue Sticks
Scissors
Circle Patterns (she used bowls)
Wool or Regular Felt
Marking Pen
Grapevine Wreath
Shiny or Fuzzy Snowflakes from
The Dollar Tree (get 'em cheap)

This would be a great family activity.  The older kids can help make the roses and the little ones can help put everything together.  They can hand you the supplies as you need them - obviously the glue gun is to dangerous for them.  Enjoy - I'd love to see your finished projects!

Giving to Others

You know, buying presents and gifts for those in our family is a fun thing to do but how many of you have kids that are really disappointed when they reach the end of their particular MOUNTAIN of presents.  They of course don't have to give presents from their own wallet and just don't understand that Christmas (or other holidays) isn't about them.  I've been thinking of ways that families can make the holidays FUN and still teach the concept of giving to others.  Here are a few charities you might consider sponsoring.  Be sure to encourage your kids to help in choosing what to give and maybe if you can afford to - let them each choose a "present" or gift to give to others.
Adopt-A-Classroom invites the community into the classroom in support of teachers and their students. By adopting a classroom, donors form partnerships with specific classrooms providing financial and moral support. The result is a meaningful contribution to education in which donors experience the impact of their efforts and celebrate in a classroom's success.

  1. Begin by going to the Classroom Locator and find a classroom in your community that is participating.
  2. You may donate any amount you desire, with a minimum of $25 per classroom.
  3. You can adopt as many classrooms as you like.
  4. You may visit the classroom, chaperone field trips, sponsor a career day, and support other activities that you coordinate directly with the teacher.
If there isn’t a class/teacher in your community that’s part of this great program, find a school, library or maybe there’s a family in your church that needs some help (ask your pastor) and find out what they’re needs are and help with those.

Zoe Ministry: Giving Hope to Orphans in Africa
This Christmas, give the gift of a new beginning.

In Africa, a cow, pig, even a goat can be the first step toward transforming the life of an orphan who is left to care for younger brothers and sisters because the AIDS pandemic claimed the lives of their parents.

The ZOE Orphan Empowerment Project equips these children with essential life skills such as farming, animal husbandry and small business training while sharing the good news of Christ’s love.

An animal provides income, fertilizer for fields, and nourishment as orphans journey through ZOE’s Empowerment Project. Thanks to your gift, within three years, orphans escape the cycle of poverty and start living lives of dignity.

Children participating in this program receive the following based on their needs: hoes, gardening tools, seeds, animals, cereals, potatoes, mentoring and these in turn provide school fees, uniforms, food and supplies.  They also have a mentor that teaches them how to clear their fields, take care of their animals, teaches them basics that most of us have learned from our parents such as financial needs and the love of Jesus Christ.

This would be a fun activity for a family to do through out the year.  Perhaps you can do a car, garage or bake sale to raise money to supply some of the children with basic needs. You can be a monthly partner, a prayer partner and ZOE has a number of other seasonal resources including a family devotional for Advent, Hope for Christmas Animal Project, special weekly prayers for Lent, a litany for World AIDS Day as well as VBS curriculum and Alternative Giving Fairs for churches to participate in together. Make a donation to Zoe Ministry HERE.

Did You Know?   The 12 Days of Christmas refer to the twelve day period that starts with Christmas day and ends on Epiphany (6th January). The song begins, On the first day of Christmas my true love gave to me... The 'true love' was meant to represent God, the true love of the world. The 'me' in the carol is the Christian man or woman who receives these presents. The meanings given to the 12 Days are:
1The 'partridge in a pear tree' is Jesus who died on the cross. In ancient times a partridge was often used as mythological symbol of a divine, sacred king.
The 'two turtle doves' are the Old and New Testaments of the Bible - another gift from God. Doves also symbolise peace.
The 'three French hens' are faith, hope and love - the three gifts of the Holy Spirit. (See 1 Corinthians 13). The French hens can also represent God the Father, His Son Jesus and the Holy Spirit.
The 'four calling birds' are the four Gospels in the New Testament of the Bible.
The 'five golden rings' are the first five books of the Bible also called the Pentateuch, the Books of Moses or the Torah.
The 'six geese a-laying' are the six days of creation.
The 'seven swans a swimming' are the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit. (See 1 Corinthians 12:8-11, Romans 12, Ephesians 4, 1 Peter 4:10-11)
The 'eight maids a milking' are the eight beatitudes, Jesus' teachings on happiness. (See Matthew 5:3-10)
The 'nine ladies dancing' are nine fruits of the Holy Spirit. (See Galatians 5:22)
The 'ten lords a-leaping' are the Ten Commandments in the Bible. (See Exodus 20)
The 'eleven pipers piping' are the eleven faithful disciples of Jesus.
The 'twelve drummers drumming' were the twelve points of the Apostles' Creed.
Thought I'd share!
